Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo: Personality, Care & Facts

The red-tailed black cockatoo is one of the most dramatic parrots in the world – a large, glossy-black cockatoo whose males flash brilliant scarlet panels in the tail when they fly. Native to Australia, this striking bird is a prized collector’s cockatoo, admired for its size, its sculptural crest, and its calmer, more dignified presence compared with the boisterous white cockatoos. Uncommon in aviculture, it is a bird for experienced keepers who appreciate something out of the ordinary.

We hand-raise red-tailed black cockatoos, so here is an honest profile of this spectacular black parrot.

Personality and temperament

Red-tailed black cockatoos tend to be calmer and more composed than the excitable white species – intelligent, observant birds that bond well with a patient owner. Males are the ones with the vivid red tail bands, while females show orange-yellow barring, so the sexes can be told apart, a theme we explore in our guide to male vs female cockatoo. They are gentle when well-socialised but, as large and less common birds, they reward an experienced hand who understands their quieter, more measured nature.

Care and housing

As a large cockatoo, the red-tailed black needs a big, strong cage or aviary, plenty of out-of-cage time, and hardwood and foraging enrichment to occupy its powerful beak. Feed a varied pellet-based diet supplemented with the native nuts and seeds it naturally favours, protect good sleep, and maintain regular avian vet care, following our cockatoo care guide. They are moderately vocal – see our guide to cockatoo noise.
